North West Travel Guide
The North West shares borders with Botswana and is situated north of South Africa. The province has exceptional game reserves and also has intriguing geological and archeological resources. The Pilansberg National Park, located in the crater of an extinct volcano, is an excellent natural attribute of the province. In Hartbeespoort Dam, located in the heart of the Magaliesberg, tourists can experience a variety of fun and leisure activities. Sun City is a major attraction of North West, located in the Pilansberg. The provinces’ main economic activity is mining, followed by manufacturing, construction and agriculture. North West is the main producer of white maize in South Africa. The North West is also referred to as “Little Texas” with large herds of cattle. Portions of two World Heritage Sites fall within North West, the first being the Vredefort Dome, and the Taung Hominid Fossil Site.
The North West is a summer rainfall region.
Setswana is the primary language of North West, followed by Afrikaans and isiXhosa spoke by the rest.
Mafikeng is the capital city and lies near the Botswana border. The city is famous for the siege during the Anglo Boer War. Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp have the most economic activity, followed by Rustenburg.
