Limpopo Travel Guide
Limpopo province is the northernmost province in South Africa, bordering Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It is also a point in the world through which the Tropic of Capricorn runs. The province lies within the great curve of the Limpopo River and it is a region of dramatic landscapes, from the scorching bushveld to magnificent mountains, indigenous forests and unspoilt wilderness. Limpopo is home to the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site. The tourism industry is one of the main economic activities, as is agriculture.
The tropical climate allows for the production of exotic fruit such as litchis and mangoes. With summer rainfall, the province has hot and humid summers with winters being mild and mostly frost-free.
Limpopo’s primary language is Sepedi, followed by Xitsonga, Tshivenda and English.
Polokwane is the capital city of Limpopo. It is also the commercial and agricultural centre, the cultural heart of the region. In addition to the Kruger National Park, which is one of the provinces’ main attractions, there are 54 provincial reserves and several luxury private game reserves. Modimolle is a big producer of table-grapes and is located near the Waterberg mountain range. Other major towns are Thabazimbi and Tzaneen. Near the southern border is Bela-Bela, with its popular mineral water baths.
